Dr. Atomic: Legacies is part of a Website developed by the Exploratorium for the San Francisco Opera's production of the opera Doctor Atomic. This interactive diagram maps the relationships between scientists who worked on the Manhattan Project and a number of National Laboratories and Scientific Institutions.

design: The use of concentric circles is meant to suggest Bohr's atomic model. The color scheme, animation style, use of initials, and 'decaying' flashes of brightness as you roll over names are all meant to evoke atomic physics.

technical: Doctor Atomic Legacies was developed in Flash 8, using object-oriented Actionscript 2.0. Data is read from an XML file, and the diagram is drawn algorithmically to optimize nearness of connected names and to minimize overlapping connecting lines.
